Greetings from the Canada Africa Partnership on AIDS (CAP AIDS), a registered Canadian charity that supports the people on the front lines in the struggle to resist, survive and overcome the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa.
CAP AIDS was formed in 2003 and has so far supported more than 25 projects in five African countries, namely: Uganda, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa.
The Shut Up & Do Something (SUADS) campaign is the brainchild of a remarkable young Canadian woman, Danielle Howe. In August 2006, Danielle was watching the TV coverage of the 16th International AIDS Conference taking place in Toronto when the impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa touched her.
Danielle was shocked to learn that 40 children died of AIDS each hour while, in South Africa, 800 people died of AIDS every day. She was still in grade eleven at Ancaster High School in Ancaster, Ontario. She thought of the roughly 1,400 kids at the school and how they'd all be wiped out in just two days at that rate.
Danielle decided that she and other young Canadians needed to “shut up for a full 24 hours and do something” about HIV/AIDS in Africa. She contacted the Geneva, Switzerland-based Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, to discuss her fundraising idea. The agency recommended CAP AIDS.
Danielle approached CAP AIDS and, together, we launched the campaign in 2007. In 2007 and 2008, high school students from across Canada raised over $35 000 to support CAP AIDS’ grassroots, community-based HIV/AIDS initiatives in Africa. CAP AIDS used the funds to support project benefitting AIDS orphans, AIDS care givers and HIV/AIDS educators in Ethiopia and Uganda.
CAP AIDS' work is volunteer-driven and depends on the dedication of individuals "local heroes" like Danielle. In the next few weeks, hundreds of high school students will be joining hands with Danielle and CAP AIDS during the SUADS 09 campaign.
SUADS 2009
The campaign will be spread over three months from March 1, 2009, to May 31st, 2009, with one day devoted to "24 hours of silence". For 24 hours, students taking part in the campaign will remain silent in solidarity with the heroic people of Africa who live with the impact of the pandemic every day.
Leading up to this day the students will share information about HIV/AIDS in Africa, and collect pledges to support CAP AIDS’ HIV/AIDS work with grassroots, community-based African NGOs.
CAP AIDS will coordinate the campaign jointly with Danielle, who is now attending Dalhousie University. Danielle is also the campaign's Ambassador. You too have a crucial role to play.
